Local volleyball players know the start of summer means the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships is right around the corner. In order to help Gulf Coast Region teams prepare, Storm Volleyball will host the “Storm AAU Invitational” at the Foley Event Center, June 8 – 9.
Nicole Keshock and Shawn Weaver have hosted this event for three years and are focused on making the fourth annual competition stronger. In addition to the local teams, the Storm AAU Invitational draws girls teams, ages 13 and older, from Louisiana, North Alabama and West Florida. Weaver said it’s not hard to convince teams to participate as it offers a chance to practice for nationals in one of their favorite venues.
“The City of Foley creates an atmosphere all travel teams love for a tournament,” Weaver said. First off, it’s the best facility, it’s convenient, there are great places to eat, premier shopping, and affordable hotels.”
Foley Event Center Building Supervisor, Jeff Ryan, said the city loves having volleyball in town.
“Many of these teams may have visited Foley before,” Ryan said. “This is our chance to showcase more of what the city has to offer and encourage them to try new restaurants or visit new attractions. The staff loves having visitors return because we get to help them make each trip different, but just as memorable.”
The Storm AAU Invitational runs from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. It’s open to the public and there is a $5 charge for admission. For more information on this tournament or and Foley Sports Tourism event visit our events page.
