Snap Soccer is returning to the Foley Sports Tourism (FST) Fields for the Southern 5v5 Challenge June 20.
The tournament will be the first to take to the fields since they closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tournament Director Zack Touchstone said they were looking for a way to ease into the “new normal” by holding an event that features less players on the field.
“The 5v5 is good parallel to the Futsal events that we normally do,” Touchstone explained. “We tried to keep the rules as similar as possible.”
Touchstone said they are expecting about 55 teams from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, and Louisiana. With people coming in from a range of areas, Snap Soccer worked closely with FST to implement new policies and procedures to keep everyone safe.
Foley Director of Recreation and Sports Tourism, David Thompson, said everyone is working together to navigate this uncharted territory.
“We have always enjoyed working with Snap Soccer because they share our commitment to helping visitors play in Foley as safely as possible,” Thompson said. “While we feel we have a strong set of protocols in place we are always looking for ways to better ourselves. Snap Soccer has helped us proactively look into new technologies and procedures that work well for everyone involved.”
The Southern 5v5 Challenge will run from all-day June 20. It is open to the public, however, new policies will be in place including the enforcement of social distancing. There is a $5 charge for parking.
