LAV Invite Brings Competition and Coaches Camp

The Lower Alabama Volleyball Invitational returns to the Foley Event Center January 23 – 24 and is giving players a chance not only at great competition but an NCAA Division II College Coaches Camp as well.

Tournament Director Kate Wood said they are anticipating close to 100 teams from Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama. Each registered player is invited to attend a camp in which they will run drills with collegiate coaches from universities across the Southeast. The camp will also involve a 30-minute talk about what the recruiting process is like.

Wood said while they are excited about adding new components to the event, one thing that will never change is the focus on safety.

“We are creating smaller pools for teams so less people will be in the gym.  Times are staggered for pool and bracket start times and we are limiting the amount of spectators per team,” Wood explained. “We will also be utilizing the Remind App to let parents know when to enter the building to watch.”

Foley Sports Tourism Event Operations Coordinator Chad Raybon said the LAV Invite is an event that is working hard to help players grow, even in a COVID environment.

“It’s been a long road for sports the last year. But now we seem to be on a great trajectory. We’ve found ways to give kids the opportunity to play safely,” Raybon said. “Now the LAV Invite is going beyond that and helping them also develop as players in a safe environment. This is something we at FST we feel passionately about and are very excited to continue to develop a partnership with.”

The LAV Invitational runs all day both Saturday and Sunday. The coaches camp will run January 22 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Due to COVID safety protocols, spectators are limited and the event will not be open to the general public.
