Labor Day is often referred to as the official end of summer. While it might signal the end of one season, it’s also the kickoff of volleyball season with the Labor Day Classic, August 30 – 31.
Co-tournament director, Shawn Weaver, describes the Labor Day Classic as a “one-of-a-kind” tournament that brings schools together regardless of what division they play.
“This is a one and only event in Alabama that has all school divisions at one location,” Weaver said. “The Classic features 7th grade, 8th grade, Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams. It is a great way to start off the season with teams from the same school and feeder pattern to participate together.”
The tournament is a partnership between Foley High School Volleyball and Xtreme Volleyball Camps. The event anticipates 60 teams from Alabama, Florida, and Texas to compete. Being only the second time held, the Classic is experiencing huge growth with the number of teams registering doubling over last year.
Angela Sullivan, Foley Sports Tourism (FST) Event Operations Manager, said the organization loves seeing the growth of an event that has huge potential.
We when our mission of bringing economically impactful events to our city intersects with opportunities for our hometown team,” Sullivan said. “Our staff is incredibly excited to have the Classic back and giving Foley High School the chance to play teams they might not normally see during the regular season.”
The Labor Day Classic is open to the public and there will be an $8 charge for admission each day.
