Volleyball at the Foley Event Center is continuing to explode with another record-setting event on the docket for this weekend. The 25th Anniversary Gulf Coast Classic is expecting to bring more than 125 teams to the area for a weekend of strong competition.
Tournament Director Shawn Weaver said there will be eight age groups competing, ranging from grassroots to 18-year-olds. There are likely college recruiters in the audience so the level of play is expected to be high. Weaver said it’s because the tournament has gained such a reputation.
“We are celebrating 25 years of hosting one of the top volleyball tournament on the gulf coast,” Weaver said. “The Gulf Coast Classic has been held for the past 24 years using several gyms in the Robertsdale, Foley, and Gulf Shores area. We are proud to partner with Foley Event Center to host 12 courts with over 100 teams inside their incredible sports facility.”
Foley Director of Recreation and Sports Tourism David Thompsons said he was excited to be partnering with such a storied event.
“The Gulf Coast Classic has built a reputation as a top competition, it’s obvious through the number of teams that attend,” Thompson said. “We are building our own reputation as a world-class sports facility that lets players compete, stay, shop, and dine all in one place. The Gulf Coast Classic is really allowing us to forward that mission.”
Weaver encourages the public to come check out the action and see some of the best players compete. The event runs from 8 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, February 17 through Sunday, February 18 and there is a $5 charge for admission.
