Futsal Kicks Off FST 2020 Calendar

Foley Sports Tourism (FST) is gearing up for an exciting 2020. To welcome in the new year in true sports fashion, the calendar “kicks” off with the Winter Futsal Challenge, January 3-4, at the Foley Event Center.

Snap Soccer estimates approximately 45 teams to compete in boys and girls divisions ranging in age from U9 – U 16. Snap’s Operations Manager, Zack Touchstone, explained that the organization plans to continue expanding futsal throughout the Gulf Coast region because of its increasing popularity.

“I think the growth is due to the programs in the area, like Gulf Coast Futsal providing an outlet for kids to experience the game for the first time,” Touchstone said. “Additionally, the FIFA video game has introduced a ‘Volta’ game mode which is very similar to futsal.”

FST Event Operations Coordinator, Chad Raybon, said Foley is excited to bring sports that are less established into the facility.

“We firmly believe that there is a sport out there for everyone,” Raybon said. “For some, that’s a familiar sport like basketball. For others, it’s something new like futsal. This is our opportunity to share new things with our community while also bringing tourism dollars to the city.”

The Winter Futsal Challenge is open to the public and there is a $5 admission charge. For more information on this tournament or any FST event, visit our events page.
