Snap Soccer had such success with their Southern 5v5 Challenge in June they’ve brought the format back for the August Southern Challenge on August 1 at the Foley Sports Tourism (FST) Fields.
Tournament Director Zack Touchstone said by taking a futsal format outdoors, the whole feel of the game changes. It also was better for everyone in this COVID-19 world.
“It’s smaller sided than our normal events in order to cut down on those on the field at the same time. This also allows teams to register outside of their normal club and makes it less formal,” Touchstone explained. “Fewer teams, spaced out fields, more time between games to let teams leave the field and enter the field while crossing paths with as few people as possible are all things we are implementing.”
Foley Director of Recreation and Sports Tourism, David Thompson, said the 5v5 events have been something FST and Snap have been able to develop with safety at the forefront.
“These events were developed in order to allow kids to compete in the safest manner possible and it’s been a huge hit,” Thompson said. “This ‘futsal outdoors’ format isn’t something we may have ever thought of prior to COVID-19. It’s fun for the participants because it’s a new kind of soccer. It’s also make parents feel better because it allows for participation in a safe way.”
The August Southern Challenge will last most of the day August 1 and there is a $5 charge for parking. For more information on this tournament or any FST event, visit our events page.
