Ready, set, go: $16 million ball rolling for Foley Sports Tourism Complex’s athletic fields

With a construction contract approved, it’s go time for the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.

In the next two weeks, heavy equipment is expected to begin reshaping the landscape on a portion of 89 acres near Juniper Street that in a year’s time will be home to 15 state-of-the-art athletic fields and an adjacent 1,000-seat championship field.

The fields will make up half of the large-scale sports venue that is being built next to the proposed $200 million Blue Collar Country entertainment complex, north of Baldwin County 20 between Juniper Street and the Foley Beach Express. The other half is the planned 104,000-square-foot Foley Events Center.

All told, the complex is expected to cost about $27 million, of which $16 million will cover the athletic fields and amenities.

On Wednesday, the city-created Public Athletic and Sports Facilities Cooperative District approved a $9.5 million “design-build” contract with Missouri-based Killian Construction Company and a $1.94 million contract with Iowa-based Musco Lighting.
